Current responsibilities:

  • Collection, purification, evaluation, maintenance, characterization and documentation of Asparagus adscendens, Desmodium gangeticum, Gymnema sylvestre, Plantago ovata, and Withania somnifera
  • Development of high yielding varieties with appropriate secondary metabolite content in isabgol, and ashwagandha

Recent 3 major contributions:

  • Varieties Developed: Developed a high yielding isabgol variety, “Vallabh Isabgol-1”
  • Germplasm Registered: Developed and registered five elite germplasm lines viz., (i) DPO 14 (INGR11035) -an early maturing (85-90 days) and high yielding mutant with high harvest index (>22%); (ii) DPO 296-4 (INGR 14010), a Golden yellow leaf colour mutant of isabgol; (iii) DGS 22 (INGR 13041) – A high fruit producing and high leaf yielding Gymnema sylvestre germplasm accession; (iv) DWS 327 – A dwarf (less than 30cm) ashwagandha pure line and DWS-6 a decumbent growth habit pure line of ashwagandha have been registered with NBPGR, New Delhi.
  • Technologies developed: Hybridization technique in Isabgol, Tetraploids in isabgol, and male sterile plants in ashwagandha (first report)
